MARIAL SHAYOK scouted by Oğuzhan Yıldırım

Shayok was born in Ottowa, Canada in 1995. He started playing basketball at an early age. After his time in Canada, he went to the University of Virginia to play college ball but then transferred to Iowa where he finished his college career. After his brief time in college, he was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers as their 54th overall pick. He had a very impressive summer league where some may recognize him from the memes about him looking like KD on the court with his long arms and similar shooting mechanic. Due to his performance, he has signed a 2-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers yet he spent most of his time for Delaware Blue Coats, the 76ers G-League team. Then he played for Bursaspor in Turkey for the 2020-2021 season where I had the chance to watch him regularly.

( We can see the stats of Shayok starting from his high school career )

Standing at 6’6 with 200 pounds along with his +7’0 wingspan Shayok doesn’t lack any tool to be a good driver on the offensive end and disturbing defender on the opposite side of the court. Maybe he lacks the NBA-level speed and explosiveness but he can still be classified as an elite athlete by EuroLeague standards. I have to see him in Fenerbahce’s offensive scheme in order to get a better understanding of him on the offensive end but with his long wingspan and lateral quickness, he will be an important weapon for the defensive scheme. We already know how dangerous he is in the transition offense since he can shoot from the perimeter, drive to the basket and he does them very quickly often with the optimal choices. The other thing that encourages me about him on the defensive end is his height to wingspan ratio he is not that tall when compared with his wingspan which makes him very dangerous since he will be so close to the floor when he’s on the defensive stance.

I think he will be a great teammate he is very disciplined and has the necessary traits of a leader, he looks and acts like a guy who cares about winning and impacting the game. He won’t be afraid of taking responsibility in a crisis situation. This is very important for Fenerbahce since teams lacked “warrior-like” players.

Shayok is good at creating his own shot and he had a whole season to practice it since Bursaspor asked him to isolate the offenses regularly. This may be deceiving tho since we don’t have any idea what will he do when he has less time playing with the ball within an organized offense against EL caliber players.

He was a decent 3 level scorer from the court throughout his career. Even though he started with below the average field goals at the beginning of his college career he fixed it by time. We can see that he shot with 48% FG last season and around 32% from behind the line. He is actually a better perimeter shooter than his percentages state and I can say this because his 3pt shot quality was very low back in Bursaspor they were generally tough shots tried after isolation or PNR plays while having a defender on him. I suppose that under Coach Kokoskov and with more qualified he would find himself in more comfortable shooting situations which he will connect with a higher FG percentage.

Shayok is a player who can do almost everything above a certain level but we didn’t watch him in such an organized and tough competition yet that’s why I have some doubt about his transition. I believe in Fenerbahce’s coaching team and Shayok’s work ethic. It may take some time for him to adjust but after few games in EL and TBL, he would start to be a huge upside for Fenerbahce.
