Eyassu Worku – Euroball Scouting Report by Ian Riaf (recently signed by KK Zadar)

Our very own Ian Riaf took on the challange to do a remote scouting session with Eyassu Worku a recent graduate of UC Irvine and did an amazing job. Below is the session as well as a follow up write up that he has shared.

Write Up:

Eyassu Worku is a 21-year old floor general and a graduate of UC Irvine. He recently signed his first professional deal with the Croatian team KK Zadar bringing the same kind of high IQ playmaking to the Croatian League and the ABA as he did during his college days.

As the primary ball-handler, Worku had his best season last year as UC Irvine finished with the best record in the Big West. Not only did he lead his team in assists, but he stepped up as a floor spacer during his senior year with jumps in volume and efficiency from beyond the arc.

Selected for the All-Big West Second Team, he prides himself on being a winner first and foremost and hopes to bring this same mentality to KK Zadar. He draws on inspiration from high IQ guards Steve Nash and Tony Parker, and it’s apparent that his understanding of the game is well studied with an emphasis on craftyness. With this high IQ element in his game, Worku posted his lowest turnover rate and highest assist rate during his senior year. After getting a chance to watch film on him, he excels going downhill with the ball in his hands, especially in the pick and roll action.

Tasked with the primary ball-handlers duty, Worku is also capable of playing both guard positions where he ranked as an elite ( 90th percentile), spot-up shooter. This will allow him to stay on the floor for more extended periods of time. While Worku’s game is unique, stylistically, he profiles as a high skill guard similar to the likes of Monte Morris, Tyus Jones, and showcases comparable finishing and playmaking traits to Ricky Rubio.

As a pesky on-ball defender, Worku understands when to jump the passing lanes. After getting a chance to pick his brain, Worku prides himself on being an improved on-ball defender, one capable of calling out offensive sets before they happen.
