INTRODUCTION

This is the third part of my series about rebounding, you can find Part I and Part II in this very same site. In this final part we are going to dive deeper in the punishment concept; we’ll put this punishment concept into perspective comparing quick shots based on their origin, and the we’ll check the ultimate balance for punishment plays in four different scenarios:

  • Comparing how many times a team punishes its opponent off a defensive rebound against how many times this team gets punished off a defensive rebound by its opponent
  • Comparing how many times a team punishes its opponent off an offensive rebound against how many times this team gets punished off an offensive rebound by its opponent
  • Checking the own basket battle, that’s to say, how many times a team punishes its opponent off a defensive rebound against how many times this team gets punished off an offensive rebound by its opponent
  • Checking the opponent’s basket battle, that’s to say, how many times a team punishes its opponent off an offensive rebound against how many times this team gets punished off a defensive rebound by its opponent

And we’ll check those four scenarios taking into account total numbers as well as the shot zone.

Remember that we consider a punishment play when a shot is taken in 8 seconds or less.
